Savarkhed Ek Gaon is a made-for-TV Marathi movie by Bhaskarrao Bhagwat. The movie is about two brothers,
Jalu and Ramdas who decide to create their own destiny in the fields of education and entrepreneurship.
The story starts when they decide to start an English medium school in their ancestral land in India’s rural Maharashtra region. One day the boys find a woman in distress on their lands and she reveals to them that she comes from America and her husband has gone missing. Sensing an opportunity, the boys hatch a plan for this woman to be able to teach at their school without any documentation problems. The woman and her husband (who is actually in prison in the USA) end up falling in love and the woman decides that she wants to become a Marathi bride. The boys decide to use this opportunity to get into the school system in California and they arrange for her marriage to one of their relatives who is a student at University of California, Davis (UCD). But it turns out that the man they marry her off to is not too pleased with their plan and when he finds out about it, he takes his revenge. What follows is a lot of suspense, comedy and tragedy.The movie was a huge hit for the television channel Colors.
It got a TRP rating of 9.4, which is incredible for a movie on Indian television. It also allowed the channel to get into the Marathi programming space in India’s second largest city, Mumbai.
The movie was produced by Bhaskarrao Bhagwat who was the director of one of Indian Television Channel Colors’ most popular shows, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2003 TV series). The show, also produced by Bhaskarrao Bhagwat, was extremely popular in India’s rural Maharashtra region. It was the highest-rated show on Indian television during the 2003–04 TV season.
Bhaskarrao Bhagwat had earlier worked on a successful series called Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which aired on Doordarshan before being taken nationwide by Colors Channel. The show ran for 6 years between 2002–06. Another Star Plus show, Hum Paanch (Season 1), was produced by him too.
The movie continues to air on all major cable network in India including STAR Plus, Sony Pix, Sony MAX and Rishtey TV currently .
The movie was released on DVD in India on 27 November 2008 by Big Cinemas Ltd.The DVD of the movie was also released two months after the DTH release, on 12 February 2009. "As per Savarkhed Ek Gaon"
